Scottish Rite History

Members of the DeMolay | 1919
Photograph of the early members of the Order of DeMolay in 1919. Founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1919 by Frank Land it was open for membership to young men between the ages of 12 and 21. DeMolay was named for Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. A family connection to Masonry was not a prerequisite for membership. Identified members include Allen Hills (front row, second from left), Don Monroe (middle row, second from left), Robert Classer (middle row, third from left), and Hans Losch (middle row, far right). Scottish Rite records show Louis G. Lower, Ivan M. Bentley, Edmund Marshall, Gorman A. McBride, Jerome Jacobson, William W. Steinhilber, Elmer Dorsey, Clyde C. Stream, and Ralph Sewell were the nine founding members who originally met with Frank Land. At the second meeting there were thirty-one boys. (Photo restored by B Marchant)
